What is cosmetic eyelid surgery?

Cosmetic eyelid surgery involves removing excess skin and fat from around the eyes and may include muscle tightening. The procedures are designated as cosmetic surgery because they’re not medically necessary and primarily enhance your appearance.

What are the types of cosmetic eyelid surgery? 

There are two main types of cosmetic eyelid surgery. 

Upper blepharoplasty
Upper blepharoplasty deals with the upper eyelids. It’s common for eyelids to stretch as you age, leading to skin drooping. In extreme cases, the upper lids can droop low enough to cover part of your eye. 

Upper blepharoplasty removes extra skin and fat and tightens the muscles in the upper eyelids. It gives you a better upper eyelid definition and a more youthful appearance. 

Lower blepharoplasty

Will insurance pay for cosmetic eyelid surgery?

Insurance providers don’t cover cosmetic procedures. However, there are specific cases in which an eyelid problem requires correction because it’s affecting your eyesight, and in those situations, insurance may cover the surgery. 

For example, if you have severe ptosis — upper eyelid drooping — that keeps you from seeing clearly, it might qualify as a medically-necessary procedure. The team can evaluate your degree of vision obstruction and take photos of your ptosis to assess your situation. 

Is there a non-surgical alternative to cosmetic eyelid surgery? 

Only surgery can produce long-lasting results for sagging eyelids, fat loss, and other eyelid issues. However, Ophthalmology Associates of Bay Ridge does offer Botox® and dermal filler injections, which can temporarily relax wrinkles (Botox) and fill in areas of volume loss (fillers). Botox lasts around three months, and fillers last up to a year.
