Blocked tear ducts can cause excessive tearing and significant discomfort for patients. Reopening the tear ducts in such cases frequently restores normal tear function.

Tears normally drain from small holes in your eyelids (called puncta), through the bones in the nose, out toward your nose. Blockage in any part of the drainage pathway will cause excessive tearing. Your eyelid doctor will first test your tear ducts in the office by attempting to pass a small amount of saline solution through your tear duct system. If a blocked tear duct is noted, your eyelid doctor will determine the location of the blockage. In many cases, a surgery called dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is needed to restore the proper drainage of tears. DCR surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis, usually in under one hour.
